NSF-Funded Project Establishes Smart Community Cloud Platform in Lafayette
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL) and Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) have received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to establish a community cloud platform as part of the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities project. This initiative, funded by NSF, supports the development of advanced technology infrastructure to enhance connectivity and drive innovation in over 30 communities across the U.S., including Lafayette.
“Over the last several years, the National Science Foundation has invested in fundamental research that is enabling smart and connected communities throughout the U.S.,” said Erwin Gianchandani, NSF’s acting assistant director for computer and information science and engineering.
The Louisiana Smart Community Cloud Platform addresses the growing need for citizen-engaged services by migrating the existing GENI rack research platform to a container-based regional cloud platform. This will provide high-bandwidth, low-latency access for smart community applications, including flood modeling and emergency operations, with the ability to extend to regional communities and major cloud providers.
