Protecting Homeless Populations Through AI and Community Outreach
Researchers led by Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Erfan Goharian are developing a flood warning system to protect homeless populations in California, a state prone to both homelessness and natural disasters. Funded by an NSF Smart and Connected Communities grant, the system uses AI-powered cameras to monitor flood-prone areas, providing real-time alerts to vulnerable communities. Collaborating with researchers from San Diego State University, the team aims to improve resource allocation for outreach programs. This innovative approach highlights the importance of community-driven solutions to address societal challenges.
