Federal Investment Expands Accessible Transit Options Across Northwest New Brunswick

Northwest New Brunswick communities will see major improvements to public transit following a $704,160 federal investment through Canada’s Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF). Announced by MP Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault, the funding will enable the Northwest Regional Services Commission (NRSC) to expand and modernize transit services that support regional mobility and economic vitality.

The project includes purchasing new vans, including a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, installing new bus shelters, and deploying updated transit management software for Flexgo, the region’s transportation service provider. These upgrades will benefit residents in the Vallée-des-Rivières, Grand Falls Regional Municipality, Saint-Quentin, and Kedgwick areas.

Local leaders emphasized that enhanced transit is critical not only for daily travel to work, school, and essential services, but also for supporting seniors, strengthening workforce access, enabling post-secondary education, and boosting tourism and sustainable development initiatives.

This investment is part of the federal government’s broader effort to improve mobility in rural and remote regions, support climate and sustainability goals, and foster economic growth through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. Local governments are contributing an additional $88,020 to the project.

The RTSF, operating under the Canada Public Transit Fund, is designed to expand equitable access to reliable transit for rural, remote, Indigenous, and Northern communities, contributing to stronger and more connected regions.
